Where to Skate: The Bronx
Mullaly Park, home of a public skate park, is in the Bronx, as is The Key
Skating Center roller rink.
The North Bronx Bikeway along Pelham Parkway (from the last stop on the
#6 to the Pelham Parkway stop on the #2) looks to be skateworthy. The city
bikeways map indicates that there is an extension of this path leading
northwest along the Mosholu Parkway almost to Van Cortland Park. Also check
out the Bronx River trail, which runs parallel to Bronx Park East and the
Bronx River Parkway from Pelham Parkway up to East 233rd St. All these
trails should be fairly flat.
As of summer 2000, there are marked bike lanes on both sides of Prospect
Ave. from 149th St. to Crotona Park (approx 170th St.).
In the early 1990s, a four-mile section of the Grand Concourse's center
roadway was closed to auto traffic on Sunday afternoons through the summer.
However, beginning in 1996, this was stopped. There were newspaper articles
indicating that the road closing was stopped because of a political battle
between the mayor and the Bronx borough president. However, the mayor's
office responded that it was because of "budget constraints". Pester your
city concilman if you're upset about all this. |
